Tip 86: Grow Your Twitter Network With The Aid Of Hashtags
7 Graces Checklist:
Connection; Invitation; Transparency
One of the most important elements in growing a network is relevance. Relevance is also one of the keys to the Grace of Invitation. When you ‘knock’ on someone’s ‘door’ by connecting on Twitter or any social network, in order for them have a sense of wanting to engage, they need to know you share some sort of point of convergence. Hashtags can be extremely helpful in this regard because they make it easy to identify that point. When you click on a hashtag that seems to ‘fit’ the profile of the kinds of network friends and partners you are seeking, you are likely to find many good potential connections in the stream. If you want to follow the history of that hashtag a bit further, you can use the free Topsy Advanced Search as suggested above.
But once you tap into a ‘vein’ of Twitter gold like this, how do you extract its value? I usually begin the process of engagement by various means:
I start following several of the most interesting and active people I see in the stream.
I add these people to a public list, either one I already have or a newly created one, which brings them together with other people of similar interest.
I put a few of them on my VIP list to keep a special eye on them.
I immediately RT a few of the most interesting or useful Tweets I find in the stream.
I mark a few more interesting Tweets as ‘favourites’ so I can read and RT them later.
I send a few @ messages saying hello; as an ‘icebreaker’, I tell them I found them via the specific hashtag.
I might also mention that I put them on the list (be sure you give them the link to the list) and I ask if they can recommend anyone else for the list.
